Magnolia Cemetery

Magnolia Cemetery

The cemetery was built in 1879 for Maryville’s elite.  The cemetery has a wide range of people buried there, from one of the forerunners of First Tennessee Bank and the first president of the Bank of Maryville, Joseph Burger and his wife Lizzie Knox Burger. It is also home to war heroes like James Hetherington who served in the artillery branch of service, and followed in the footsteps of Christ.  It was said that, “a truer Christian, in our opinion, never lived.”  Magnolia Cemetery is surrounded by Cates Street, Goddard Avenue, Miller Avenue, and Montvale Station Road.
